SCORM Completion & Scoring

This guide explains how course completion works when your CreateUpon course is exported as a SCORM package and imported into a Learning Management System (LMS).

How Course Completion is Determined

A course can have three different completion statuses:

Passed

The course must contain at least one required exam, AND either of the following conditions is met:

  • All lessons in the course have achieved "passed" status

  • For courses with required lessons:

    • All required exam lessons have achieved "passed" status

    • AND all required content lessons have achieved at least "completed" status

Note: "Passed" is reserved for courses with scoreable elements. If a course has no required exams, the highest achievable status is "Completed" — even when every lesson is passed.

Completed

  • If the course has no required exams: The course is capped at "Completed" once the minimum completion requirements are met, regardless of whether all lessons are passed

  • If required lessons exist (with required exams): All required lessons have achieved at least "completed" status, but the "passed" criteria above are not met

  • If no required lessons exist: All lessons have achieved at least "completed" status, but not all have "passed"

Incomplete

The minimum completion requirements have not been met

The final course score is calculated with priority given to exams:

  • If exams exist: Uses the average score of exam lessons only (prioritizing required exams over non-required)

  • If no exams exist: Uses the average score of all content lessons

  • Score is rounded to 2 decimal places for SCORM compliance

How Lesson Completion Works

Content Lessons

Content lessons are marked as complete only when:

  • A learner goes through all cards

  • AND all quiz elements in the lesson have been completed

Content lessons can have the following statuses:

  • Browsed: Initial status when a learner first visits a lesson (default)

  • Passed: All quizzes are completed with a perfect 100% score

  • Completed: All quizzes are completed, but with less than 100% score

  • Failed: For lessons with "Must be correct to proceed" enabled — when quizzes are completed but not all answers are correct

  • Incomplete: Either the content hasn't been fully viewed or interactions haven't all been completed

Exam Lessons

Exam lessons track both completion and pass/fail status:

  • An exam is initially marked as "browsed" when a learner first visits it

  • An exam is marked as "passed" when:

    • All interactive elements have been completed

    • AND the learner's score meets or exceeds the minimum score you configured in the exam settings

  • An exam is marked as "failed" when:

    • All interactive elements have been completed

    • AND the score is below the minimum score

    • AND the exam is set as "Must complete to proceed"

  • An exam is marked as "completed" when:

    • All interactive elements have been completed

    • BUT the score is below the minimum score

    • AND the exam is NOT set as "Must complete to proceed"

  • An exam is marked as "incomplete" when not all interactive elements have been completed

Required vs Optional Lessons

You can configure which lessons are required for course completion and how strictly they are evaluated:

  • For exam lessons: Set "Must complete to proceed" in the exam settings

  • For content lessons: Set "Must complete to proceed" in the lesson settings

  • For content lessons: Set "Must be correct to proceed" to require all quiz answers to be correct (not just completed)

Important: For a course to achieve "Passed" status, it must include at least one required exam. Courses with only required content lessons (no required exams) can achieve at most "Completed" status, since there is no scoreable element to "pass" against.

Must Be Correct to Proceed

When "Must be correct to proceed" is enabled for a content lesson:

  • The lesson is marked as "passed" only if ALL quiz answers are correct

  • If any quiz answer is incorrect, the lesson is marked as "failed" instead of "completed"

  • This prevents learners from progressing without demonstrating mastery of the material

  • This setting works in both regular and SCORM environments

If no lessons are marked as required, a learner must complete all quizzes in all lessons for the course to be considered complete (and the course will be marked "Completed" rather than "Passed" unless at least one required exam is present).

Technical Implementation

CreateUpon implements SCORM 1.2 specification for compatibility with most Learning Management Systems:

  • Lessons are tracked as SCORM "objectives"

  • Quiz questions are tracked as SCORM "interactions"

  • Lesson status values in SCORM:

    • "browsed" — initial status when a learner first accesses a lesson

    • "passed" — highest level of completion

    • "completed" — minimum requirements met

    • "incomplete" — requirements not met

    • "failed" — explicitly failed (for exams)

  • Course completion status uses only:

    • "passed" — highest level of completion (requires at least one required exam in the course)

    • "completed" — minimum requirements met, OR all lessons completed in a course without required exams

    • "incomplete" — requirements not met

Best Practices

  • Use Clear Requirements: Be explicit about which lessons are required for completion

  • Include a Required Exam for "Passed" Status: If you want learners to be able to achieve "Passed" status (rather than just "Completed"), the course must contain at least one required exam

  • Balance Flexibility: Consider which lessons truly need to be mandatory

  • Use "Must Be Correct" Judiciously: Enable "Must be correct to proceed" for critical lessons where mastery is essential

  • Test in Your LMS: Always test your exported course in your target LMS to verify completion behavior

  • Use Exam Lessons Strategically: Place exams at key points to verify understanding before proceeding

  • Configure Appropriate Passing Scores: Set reasonable minimum passing scores based on content difficulty
